Ursus grabbed hold of Skilurus’s wrist and wheeled him around before racing toward the door. The young man chased after his mentor, just as a maelstrom of serpentine arms dropped from the rafters and lunged for them. Midway to the door, Ursus bent down, scooped up his discarded sword and hacked several of the tooth-filled limbs away with masterful precision.
Skilurus didn’t like fleeing from the monster behind them, but he understood Ursus’s reasoning. The creature was too big. Too powerful for the two of them to defeat at the moment. But there was something else…something that bothered his friend more than the beast’s size. Something had happened to him while in its grip. Skilurus had seen the multitude of Sluagh worms pouring from Ursus’s neck just before he’d severed the creature’s hold on him. He’d seen the near-tidal wave of wriggling bodies inch their way inside the larger creature.
It’d been a ghastly sight. But Skilurus had noticed the color from Ursus’s face drain as he’d seen them disappear inside the beast. Ursus rarely showed fear, but he’d been terrified at that moment. Maybe ‘terrified’ was too harsh a word though. Perhaps ‘worried’ was more appropriate. But one thing was clear—whatever had happened had clearly affected Ursus, and that was enough to chill Skilurus’s core.
More tentacles lashed out at the pair in the twenty-yard sprint to the door, but a few skillful sweeps of their swords kept the appendages at bay. The three of them ran at full speed through the door and down the winding hallway that led to the temple’s exit.
The monster howled with rage as its prey escaped. Skilurus thanked the gods that the door was much too small for the creature to easily leave the sanctum sanctorum. Barring any other Sluagh lurking about the Roman outpost, the trio would be outside the city’s walls in a matter of minutes, and free to formulate a better plan of attack against the monstrosity they’d just fled.
But when Skilurus entered Isca Silurum’s courtyard, he was greeted by a sight he’d least expected to see—Polycarp, pinned down by a hunched-over nude figure, pounding at him with hammer-like fists. Young Clarese, tears streaking her face, stood wringing her hands by the tunnel they’d used to enter the outpost. Too small to fight, all she could do was weep and watch the violent attack unfold before her.
Before Skilurus fully comprehended the scene, Ursus drew his sword and lunged. The figure, sensing the attack, spun around. It grabbed Ursus by the wrist of his sword arm and hurled him with a strength far beyond any normal man.
Their female companion struck next, acting with the same skill and speed as Ursus, but she was just as easily defeated. The man spun to the side, avoiding the woman’s strike, and shoved her hard. She tumbled forward, attempting to slow herself, but fell hard to the ground and lay still.
